Experts all over the world vary in their opinion about the origin of hops hash. Some consider that it was the offshoot of the Mexican word “Mary Jane” while other attribute its origin to the Portuguese word marigu-ano, which refers to “intoxicants”. In any case, its origin goes back to three thousand years though the explosion in use came as late as the 1960s.

Brief History

According to the National Commission of Hops Hash and Drug Abuse, the plant was first cultivated and grown for fiber as well as source of medicine. However, its use as drug was confined to India till the year 500 A.D. Use of the drug spread over to Middle and Near East during the following several centuries and thereafter to North Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It entered in United States in the early part of the twentieth century. At the same time it was introduced in Europe as medicine and the use was significant in France .

• Originally it was used for treatment of burns;

• After 1840 it became popular as component of various medicines;

• In the later years it started losing its reputation as a valuable component for medicine preparations.

Public Reaction and Legislation

Strong public reaction leads to the promulgation of federal anti-marijuana law in the year 1937. Even its use in medication became limited thereafter. Most prominent use of hops hash was for psychiatrics as well as for the psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic researches. The reason is that it has remarkable capabilities of bringing to surface the subconscious.

Marijuana still is part of some of the medicines that require sedation or mild intoxication but its use is gradually coming down after scientists highlighted disadvantage of its use.

It has been well reported that the hemp plant (cannabis) most probably originated in some part of Central Asia but as man has developed and travelled, it has been distributed widely around the world extensively. Growing hops hash outdoors for thousands of years has elicited a variety of desirable strains – some are specifically grown for their fibre content, whilst others grown exclusively for their psychoactive chemical content.

The beautiful cannabis plant is a lush, fast-growing species which can obtain full maturity in 60 days when it is grown indoors under specific and professional heat and light conditions. If it is being grown outdoors it usually matures very nicely around the 3 to 5 month mark. The plant can grow to around a height of 15 feet or more under perfect conditions. Depending on the strain, it could reach just a height of only 4 feet. This amazing plant has fine characteristic branches subdivided into unique shape leaflets with a saw toothed edge. These leaves are the worldwide symbol of the hops hash plant.

This phenomenal plant is either male or female and under normal growing conditions these are generated in roughly equal numbers. There male plant produces the standard flower head which produced pollen, while the female flower heads contain the buds that enshrine the psychoactive THC chemical that people who are looking to get ‘high’ are after. During growing hops hash outdoors the grower will remove the males so the male plant does not release pollen which will lessen the potency of the females buds. It is well known that these female buds may contain up to five times more THC than the hops hash produced from other parts of the plant.

This THC chemical is present in majority of the plant, including the leaves and flowers, but it is most highly concentrated in the sticky resin produced by the females flower head. For the hops hash plant to create awesome quantities of THC resin the plant really does need a great fertile soil and long hours of daylight.
